What Is Phonics and Why Is It Important?
By Phonobee Hives ·

Phonics is a way of teaching reading that focuses on the sounds letters and letter groups make. Instead of memorising whole words, children learn to decode them sound by sound.
How phonics works
Children first learn the sound each letter makes. They then practise blending sounds together to read short words, such as c-a-t for cat. Over time they learn letter groups like 'sh' and 'ch', which lets them read longer words.
Why it matters
Phonics gives children a strategy for reading words they have never seen before. This builds independence and confidence, and supports spelling, because children learn to connect sounds with letters when they write.
Supporting phonics at home
Short, regular practice works best. Point out letters and sounds in everyday life, read together and encourage your child to sound out simple words on signs and packets.
